संक्षिप्त उत्तर: Idiom शब्दों का वह समूह है जिसका अर्थ उसके अलग-अलग शब्दों के शाब्दिक अर्थ से नहीं, बल्कि प्रचलन से तय होता है: "a bolt from the blue" का अर्थ "नीले आसमान से बिजली" नहीं, बल्कि अचानक आई अप्रत्याशित घटना है। हिंदी में इन्हें मुहावरे कहा जाता है, और कई idioms के हिंदी समकक्ष भी मिलते हैं: "kill two birds with one stone" = एक पंथ दो काज, "add fuel to the fire" = आग में घी डालना। Phrasal verb verb + adverb/preposition का मेल है जिसका अर्थ मूल verb से बदल जाता है: give (देना) पर give up = छोड़ देना, put (रखना) पर put off = स्थगित करना, call off = रद्द करना। परीक्षा में idiom का अर्थ चुनना, वाक्य में रिक्त स्थान भरना और phrasal verb का सही particle (off, up, after, out) चुनना सबसे सामान्य प्रश्न हैं।

3. Particle का भाव: off = हटना/रुकना (put off, call off), up = पूरा/समाप्त (give up, use up), out = बाहर/ख़त्म (put out, run out), down = नीचे/अस्वीकार (turn down, break down)।
4. "Blue" जोड़ी: "Bolt = बिजली = अचानक; Moon = चाँद = कभी-कभार"।
5. "Heels" जोड़ी: "Take to heels = भागो; Head over heels = डूब जाओ (प्रेम में)"।
6. Look-चतुष्टय: "After = देखभाल, Into = जाँच, Up = खोज, Down upon = तिरस्कार"।
